We met a week early so that Annie could attend before heading to Alaska for the summer. Linda provided a delicious salad with salmon and numerous other delectable treats while we socialized and discussed The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman. Annie, Ellen, Judy, Linda, Liz, and Nanc were in attendance.

Water view from Linda's on a sunny day... it was actually cloudy when we met, but I neglected to take a photo |
Thank you Linda for a wonderful meeting environment last night... it was lovely. Thank you for the tour of your yard... beautiful.
Rachel speaking about her mother:
I no longer cared if my mother disliked me, I didn't understand that when I closed myself to her, I took a part of her bitterness inside me. It was green and unforgiving, and as it grew it made me more like her. IT GAVE ME MY STRENGTH, BUT IT GAVE ME MY WEAKNESS AS WELL. ~ Alice Hoffman
The mission of the Moravian church built on the island:
In the new world they focused on the education of the masses and their missionaries began the school for slaves, carrying a single mission in their teachings: In essentials, unity; in nonessentials, liberty; and in all things love. ~ Alice Hoffman
~ Judy Lee
I miss you all, the lively provocation of thought, the commiseration of emotions (book, or work, or politics), and the blending of so many like spirited yet complexly diverse group of individuals. My life continues to hold surprises around every bend. Hope to catch up with all of you someday soon. Thank you for keeping me in these posts!
~ Kathy Day-Carey
Yes! Thank you, Linda, for a wonderful evening!! I will miss you all in July. Enjoy!
The following portrayed Rachel's relationship with her mother:
Perhaps that was what my mother disliked most. I resembled her. I could not help but wonder if for some women, that was the worst sin of all. ~Alice Hoffman
Rachel's dad concerning the stories of werewolves:
There is the outside of a story, and there is the inside of a story. Once is the fruit and may be delicious, but the other is the seed. ~ Alice Hoffman
Rachel wanted to call the spirits of the pirates' wives and Adelle told her they only come if they wish to, so she held out her hands and felt them, then felt she had gone against her religion, but Adelle told her:
Women of every faith have power. They have to find it in themselves. ~ Alice Hoffman
And I say Amen to that!!!
~Annie Larkin
It was wonderful to be here, so I could finally be there with all of you lovely, thoughtful, inspiring ladies last night. Thank you Linda for a most delightful evening.
~ Liz Webster
Annie... your quotes bring to mind personal mother-daughter relationships... struggles with both my mother and my daughter.
But it seems that sometimes we forget that parents are mere human beings, struggling with their own personal baggage, and we aren't all Donna Reed!
Garrison Keillor wrote something to the effect that the worst animosity he has ever seen was between women who were related. That always makes me laugh!
~Julie Howard
