Meeting: October 13, 2022

Ellen hosted October's meeting where we discussed The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, and munched on Ellen's treats. It was an overcast, chilly afternoon and about the time we were wrapping up the meeting, it started to "rain" ice pellets. So, everyone stacked up the chairs and headed home. Annie, Christie, Ellen, Linda, Jo, Judy, and Nanc attended the meeting.

Water view from Ellen's

It's sad to think that folks in that era thought that black people didn't have the same feelings about their families as white folks, but it was good to see Huck realizing this on his own.
"He was thinking about his wife and his children, away up yonder, and he was low and homesick; because he hadn't ever been away from home before in his life; and I do believe he cared just as much for his people as white folks does for their'n.  It don't seem natural, but I reckon it's so." ~ Mark Twain

Meeting: September 8, 2022

We met at Nanc's to discuss The Downstairs Girl by Stacey Lee. It had been a warm day, but the breeze made for a comfortable meeting. It cooled down significantly when the sun set. Annie, Ellen, Linda, Jo, Judy, Julie, and Nanc were in attendance.

They don't want to be men, only to be allowed to have a say. God wouldn't have given us feet if He didn't want us to walk. By the same token, why give us a brain if He didn't want us to have thoughts? ― Stacey Lee

The two words that will change your life are "thank you". Like a candle that can light a thousand more without shortening its own life, appreciation is a gift that, when given, can set the whole world aglow. ― Stacey Lee
~ Nanc

Solitude is a frequent visitor here, often dragging along her companion loneliness. Tonight the latter plants herself right in my lap. ― Stacey Lee

Life is a chessboard, and if you've played it right, your best pieces will be standing in the right squares when you need them most. ― Stacey Lee

What is the job of a parent but to teach a child that she has worth so that one day she can transform herself into whatever she wants. ― Stacey Lee
~ Annie

Meeting: July 14, 2022

Nanc hosted our July meeting where we discussed Mink River by Brian Doyle. It was a warm day, but the intermittent cloud cover and breeze made for a comfortable outdoor meeting, Ellen, Jo, Judy, Julie, Linda, Liz, and Nanc attended the meeting.

Water view from Nanc's

Tried 3 times to read the book, couldn't get past the run-on sentences without losing my cool. Love the characters and setting though.

~ Christe Gillepsie

Others in our group didn't notice the writing style as being aggravating, but I agreed with Christe that the run on sentences were distracting from a story with rich characters. Here's an example of ONE sentence:

"At four in the morning, on All Souls Day, the Day of the Dead, the second of November, the priest winning the betting pool, seven drops of water fell from the sky, headlong, pell-mell, sliding from the brooding mist, and then seventy, and then the gentle deluge, a whisper of wet, a thorough and persistence pittering on leaf mold and newt knuckle, web and wood, tent and vent, house and mouse, the rain splittering the sea, soaking boats, rinsing streets, fluffing owls and wetting towels, sliding along power lines and dripping from eaves, rivuleting and braiding and weaving tiny lines in the thirsty earth, darkening the trunks of trees, jeweling the strands of spiders, sliding along clotheslines, moistening the infinitesimal dust in rain gauges." ~ Brian Doyle

In addition, there were endless lists, some seemingly pointless to the story. Other times the lists were more relevant.

~ Nancy French

Meeting: June 9, 2022

Annie hosted our June meeting where we discussed Untamed: The Wildest Woman in America and the Fight for Cumberland Island by Will Harlan. The weather was perfect for our outdoor meeing, although some were pestered by gnats and some mosquitoes.  Annie, Ellen, Jo, Linda, Liz, and Nanc were in attendance.

Water view from Annie's

I loved the book. Carol is an amazing woman. Her enduring devotion to conservation on her island is noble and commendable. How interesting to learn of the various impacts made by politicians and wealthy families. The battles will continue, thank goodness for people like Carol.

I absolutely love the touching story about the armadillo who was killed on the road and the  burial by its mate. There is so much we aren't aware of within the lives of our fellow creatures.

And the part about cities being zoos for humans. Yup.
~ Christe Gillepsie
