Meeting: February 15, 2018

As occurred last February, we had a change of venue so that we could support the library Oscar nominated film series.  Christe, Jo, Judy, and Nanc viewed The Big Sick at the library, and then Jo, Judy, and Nanc went to the Trempealeau Hotel to eat and socialize.  Admittedly, we didn't discuss Wonder by RJ Palacio because Jo hadn't read it, and Judy and Nanc had talked about it previously.

This is my favorite part of the book Wonder.

It comes from the chapter titled "The Simple Thing" near the end of the book when Auggie is graduating from his first year of Middle School. The principal is giving his graduation speech and he says:
"... But the best way to measure how much you've grown isn't by inches or the number of laps you can now run around the track, or even your grade point average-- though those things are important, to be sure. It's what you've done with your time, how you've chosen to spend your days and whom you've touched this year. That, to me, is the greatest measure of success." ~ RJ Palacio
Mr. Tushman, the principal, then flips through The LIttle White Bird, a book by JM Barrie and finds the quote he's looking for:
"Shall we make a new rule of life... always to try to be a little kinder than is necessary?" ~ RJ Palacio
Then the principal reads an excerpt from Under the Eye of the Clock by Christopher Nolan and after doing so says:
"Such a simple thing, kindness. Such a simple thing. A nice word of encouragement given when needed. An act of friendship. A passing smile." ~ RJ Palacio
I want to type the whole chapter because it is so good; but, I guess everyone can go back and read it for themselves. It is worth reading many times; which I did. No matter how nice we are, we all need reminding of the importance of kindness!
~ Judy Lee
Wonder was a joy to read for so many reasons. I won't say any more since it hasn't been read by all yet, but I do think it should be required reading in our schools.
