After a long COVID hiatus, we finally held a meeting to discuss The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson. Judy hosted us on her deck on a lovely, breezy evening. What a delight to be able to interact with the book club neighbors again. Annie, Ellen, Jo, Judy, Linda, and Nanc attended.

My favorite statements, because they made me think of our country in the year 2021 compared to the 1930s and 1940s.......many things have NOT changed:
The doctor said to Cussy: "...we will learn soon about your family's blood and how we can fix it -------- fix you, my dear."
Cussy's thoughts about herself and the Doctor's comments: "I felt the spark of anger slip behind my eyes, prompting a headache. What I wanted most was to be okay as a Blue. I never understood why other people thought my color, any color, needed fixing."
Cussy's father: "I don't like it," he grumbles. "Those that can't see past a folk's skin color have a hard difference in them. There's a fire in that difference. And when they see you, they'll still see a Blue. No city drug's gonna change small minds, what they think about..."
Queenie Johnson says to Cussy: "Cussy Mary, I've been wanting to apologize for my words back on the trail that day. I had no right telling you how you should feel. No right claiming knowledge on things I could and will never feel. I've never known harm or exile because of my skin. Nor felt the lash of leather whips or angry tongues because of it."

I found the Bookwoman very entertaining and eye opening to the poverty in the Kentucky hills during the 30s and 40s. It was written with so much suspense when the preacher was following Cussy. People so poor they could not even help those they knew were starving.
